Passive Fire Protection

At The Passive Fire Company we install tested and approved Passive Fire Protection systems to ensure the safety of a building should a fire occur. The term passive fire protection is used to define products and systems which are a vital part of the construction of a building and are intended to protect the structure by containing fires and smoke within designated compartments to significantly eradicate or slow the extent of the fire spreading through the building.

Intumescent Coatings

An intumescent coating is a material that swells when exposed to the heat produced by a fire. The coating has special chemicals suspended within a binder. As the binder is exposed to elevated temperatures it softens allowing the chemicals to react. This reaction forms a thick solid foam-like char that can be over 50 times the original film thickness. This char burns very slowly and provides thermal protection to the underlying substrate by insulating it from heat transfer.
